John McGann's Shop Talk

Hot Rod - - Everyday - hHOTROD. COM/ John-McGann

On the way home from this year’s Power Tour®, I paid out-of-pocket for an extravagant (for me) seat upgrade on the Dallas to LAX leg of the trip. I was looking forward to three hours in Economy Plus with a luxurious 3 more inches of legroom over the standard, cattle-stockyard seating modern air travel has become. No good deed goes unpunished, however, as I was assaulted with a frenetic verbal barrage from the enthusiastic young boy in the seat next to me from the moment I sat down. The onslaught was continued all the way into the jetway at LAX, broken up only occasionally as he paused to watch a few moments of the Marvel movie he had dialed up on the screen in front of him. I guessed his age to be around 12, a fact later confirmed by his sister and father who spent the flight alternatively shushing the lad, rolling their eyes, or apologizing to me for the machine-gun chatter being hurled in my direction.

The conversation was actually quite interesting. It seems he was a budding hot rodder of sorts, though his interests were in computers, and he described to me in exhausting detail different processor cores, video cards, and other stuff I know absolutely nothing about. Software, however, is the future of our business, and passion like that can be easily directed into a fulfilling career in the automotive industry. The conversation did shift to cars when he found out what I do, and we ended up discussing power-to-weight ratios of rotary engines, the importance of efficient airflow through cylinder heads, and the possibility of souping up Tesla electric motors. Though I had desperately been looking for some quiet and solitude on the plane ride home, it was heartwarming to see such enthusiasm in the youth of today. Jeremy, if you’re out there reading this, keep that passion up, and you’ll go great places.
