Frogs QB makes strides in second start
WACO— Trevone Boykin threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns, all those scores coming on third down, and TCU won 49- 21 at Baylor on Saturday to end the Bears’ nine- game home winning streak.
Boykin, the redshirt freshman who completed 22 of 30 passes without a turnover, added 56 yards rushing with a late 3- yard touchdown for the Horned Frogs ( 5- 1, 2- 1 Big 12) in his second start.
The Horned Frogs took advantage of six turnovers by Baylor ( 3- 2, 0- 2). That included four interceptions by Nick Florence, who had touchdown passes of 74 and 77 yards to TerranceWilliams.
Baylor’s home winning streak includedawild season- opening 50- 48 victory over the Frogs last year, months before TCU joined the Bears in the Big 12.
Boykin had a full week to prepare to start this game. He threw three interceptions in his first start, a loss at Iowa State a week earlier when he had been working at tailback before Casey Pachall’s arrest on suspicion of drunken driving only two days before the game.
Pachall, the secondyear starting quarterback, has since withdrawn from school and entered an inpatient treatment program.
Florence entered the game leading the nation in total offense ( 435 yards a game).
He threw his 74- yard pass toWilliams on the second play of the game, but the next two possessions ended with interceptions. Florence was 12- of- 19 passing for 289 yards. He was sacked three times and finished with minus- 5 yards rushing on eight carries.
The Horned Frogs had the ball for nearly 42 minutes, and had scoring drives of 15 and 16 plays.
Right after Joyce Boyce’s 2- yard touchdown run for TCU late in the third quarter, Baylor got within 28- 21 on the next play when Florence hit Williams in stride for a 77yard score late in the third quarter. The quarterback took a hard hit as he let the ball go, and never saw Williams catch the ball. But the Horned Frogs scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. That included a 15- yard catch by Josh Boyce.
