MFAHGALA gilds the coffers
Many of the philanthropists who filled theMuseum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Law Building for “Modern,” the 2012 Grand Gala Ball, have been generous for years.
But few could top the record of chair who presided this year in a glittering green gown. She last chaired the event 50 years ago, MFAH director noted as he brought the crowd’s attention to an image projected above the bandstand of Long in a white gown.
“That’s not Jackie,” Tinterow said. ( There was a resemblance.) He called the quiet, discreet Long “the first lady of the arts in Houston.”
With and Dr.
Cornelia Long,
Gary Tinterow
Marie Ed Bosarge, Fayez Sarofim
and the Hildebrand Fund as grand underwriters and about a dozen major underwriters leading the way, this year’s affair earned $ 1.5 million.
Many of the ladies wore sumptuously beaded gowns in keeping with the art deco theme, which was partly inspired by Edgar Brandt’s “Firescreen,” a gilded circa 1925 wrought- iron piece. ( It was on display just for the night.) Classic art deco images were projected onto the tall walls of Cullinan Hall.
