Going Stag? Attaboy. For Houston’s well-clad and well-shod modern Beau Brummels, it’s the only way to roll.

The arrival of the Austin-based Stag Provisions for Men has been a matter of serious import to gents who appreciate the company’s dedication to sourcing quality contemporary brands such as Ralph Lauren RRL, Hamilton Shirts, Filson, Alex Mill and Gitman Bros.

Stag, which opened May 21 at 2614 Westheimer (next to Sloan/Hall), is a meticulously curated menswear store with no small measure of lifestyle smarts. Vintage furniture (tables, sofas, rugs), artwork, coffee-table books and one-of-a-kind design pieces make nice with Save Khaki shirts, Yellow 108 fedoras, Birdwell board shorts, Herschel Supply Co. backpacks, and retro Moscot eyewear. It’s a retail experience so unique that Stag is one of only two menswear stores to be featured in top 10 lists in both GQ and Esquire magazines.

“A modern classics guy — that’s our customer. Someone who likes good, classic, modern clothing,” said store general manager Arvy Lim.

The original Stag opened in Austin in 2009, co-founded by Don Weir and Steve Shuck, who created a retail experience dedicated to American individualism and the spirit of style icons such as Steve McQueen, Keith Richards and Willie Nelson. Their blend of carefully edited menswear (a mix of up-and-coming brands and mainstay designers) and lifestyle offerings remains evident in the new Houston store, in the space of the former Buffalo Hardware at Kirby and Westheimer. Shuck designed the layout of the store, which kept Buffalo Hardware’s original terrazzo floor.

In addition to clothing and lifestyle furnishings, Stag offers fashion accessories (watches, backpacks, glasses) and grooming brands (Santa Maria Novella, Malin + Goetz, Jack Black). Footwear, too: Red Wing Shoes, Clarks, Jack Purcell, Converse and New Balance).

To celebrate its arrival in Houston (there are also stores in Dallas and Venice, Calif., in addition to the original in Austin), Stag is throwing a grand opening party on Tuesday.
