Cardinals hammer Cubs, become first to 50 wins

ST. LOUIS — Michael Wacha pitched six solid innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 8-1 on Saturday night to become the first major league team with 50 wins. Jason Heyward reached four times in St. Louis’ fifth straight victory. The major league-best Cardinals (5024) have five winning streaks of five or more games.

ANGELS 4, MARINERS 2: Seattle star Robinson Cano was hit in the head by a stray ball while Los Angeles was warming up in between innings and exited early in the Angels’ win at home. Cano had a welt near his left temple after being struck in the dugout when an errant throw got past Angels first baseman Albert Pujols before the seventh inning. Cano felt dizzy and was taken to the clubhouse, where the Mariners’ medical staff checked the second baseman for a concussion. No signs of one were found.

RANGERS 4, BLUEJAYS 0: Yovani Gallardo extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 23 innings by pitching three-hit ball into the ninth, and Texas broke a six-game skid.

PIRATES 8, BRAVES4 : Pittsburgh star center fielder Andrew McCutchen was hit in the left elbow by a pitch and exited during a five-run first inning as the Pirates beat Atlanta.

ROYALS 3, ATHLETICS 2: Chris Young bounced back from his worst start of the season to pitch six innings, and Kansas City won at Oakland.

TWINS 5, BREWERS 2: Torii Hunter homered twice and doubled, and Minnesota won at Milwaukee.

GIANTS 7, ROCKIES 5: Andrew Susac had a three-run double in the seventh to rally San Francisco past visiting Colorado.

RAYS 4, REDSOX 1: Matt Andriese and three relievers combined on a three-hitter, as Tampa Bay won at home.

MARLINS 3, DODGERS 2: Tom Koehler pitched seven innings, and host Miami beat Los Angeles.

PADRES 7, DIAMONDBAC­KS 2: Justin Upton hit a goahead two-run homer in the fifth as San Diego won at home.
