Katy’s Coveney and East Bernard’s Show are the cream of the high school crop.
Kourtney Coveney moved to Katy before her sophomore season and quickly established herself as a player who would lead the team in the near future. That came to fruition this year as she helped spark the team to the Class 6A state title. Coveney, a West Texas A&M signee, had a .491 batting average during the regular season and also finished the year with a 30-4 pitching record. She drove in three of the Lady Tigers’ six runs in two state tournament games.
Q: Your team finished .500 last year. Could you ever have imagined winning a state championship this season?
A: I thought if we pushed ourselves hard in practice that we could do it. We have a bunch of girls who have a lot of talent. They can produce in different ways. We have hitters, slappers and speed, and great defense.
Q: When did you know this season that this team could be as good as it was?
A: When we started playing tournaments and getting a bunch of hits and scoring a bunch of runs.
Q: Early this season against George Ranch, you had a bad outing. Was that a wake-up call for you? What did you get out of that game that helped you the rest of the way?
A: We had just as good of hitters as they did and if we showed up and hit as well, we could beat them in the next game. As far as pitching, I needed to hit my spots better and trust my defense.
Q: Aside from winning the state title, what stands out to you most about this team?
A: How hard we worked. We worked extremely hard in the offseason to try to get to where we were. We worked hard the previous years; we just couldn’t produce when we needed the hits.
Q: Perhaps more than any other school in the state, Katy is known for football. What was the support like for the softball team during your run to the state title and in the aftermath?
A: The whole town was excited. Abunch of the football players came to the games. They cheered and gave us all the support we could ask for. The whole town had a pep rally after we got back.
