Show fulfills title expectations 2nd time around
When Samantha Show’s family moved from Pearland to East Bernard before her junior year, the general consensus would be that the Brahmarettes would be one of the top teams in the state in their classification. After a run to the state championship game last year and winning the Class 3A title this year, the predictions were unmistakably accurate. The Texas A&Msignee ended the season with a 32-2 pitching record and also had a .678 batting average during the regular season.
Q: To what extent was winning a state title this year about making up for losing in the championship game last year?
A: We had that fire under us to go out and win it all. We didn’t lose that many girls from the previous year. The majority of us knew that feeling of losing. That’s what we used to help us fight through.
Q: In what ways did it feel different being at the state tournament for the second time as opposed to the first time? Did your experience help you?
A: Last year, mynerves were crazy. Even coach (Christy) Uribe said she wasn’t nervous this time. We’ve been there. Weknow what it takes and how to calm all the nerves.
Q: In the state semifinals, you hit a home run to lead off the home half of the first inning. What was that like and did it play a role in your confidence level?
A: It definitely sparked the team’s energy. It didn’t make me feel comfortable because even though we had the advantage, it was still only 1-0. They were great hitters. Luckily, mydefense was there to pick me up.
Q: Playing for Texas A&M in the Southeastern Conference is going to be a gigantic step up from Class 3A high schools. Do you expect to be able to adjust?
A: Luckily, I get to play summer ball (with the Seguinbased Texas Bombers). That is going to help me adjust to the hitters, and when I’m hitting, too. We go to California, Colorado and Nevada for tournaments this year. We expect to be able to face some tough pitching and hitting.
Q: What are you most looking forward to at Texas A&M?
A: Getting that experience of being a college student. You watch the girls on TVand some of them are adults. I’m going to be able to be around that and learn what kind of player I truly am.
