61 lifts Merritt into tie for lead
Troy Merritt shot a tournament-record 10-under-par 61 for a share of the lead with Kevin Chappell after three rounds in the Quicken Loans National at Gainesville, Va.
Merritt moved to the top of the leader board even before the secondround leaders hit their first shots. He had 11 birdies and a bogey. Chappell had a 67 to join him at 14-under 199.
The challengers at the tournament midpoint included Tiger Woods, but the two-time champion and tournament host was errant off the tee early, gave back three strokes in his first 12 holes and finished with a 74 to drop into a tie for 42nd at 5 under.
Rickie Fowler was one shot back after a 68. In other news: • South Korea’s JinYoung Ko and Taiwan’s Teresa Lu each shot 3-under 69 to share the thirdround lead in the Women’s British Open at Turnberry, Scotland. Ko, 20, playing in her first major championship, and Lu were at 8-under 208. Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, the second-round leader, was a stroke back after a 72.
• Defending champion Kenny Perry had a holein-one and matched the 3M Championship record with an 11-under 61 to take a four-stroke lead in the Champions Tour event at Blaine, Minn. Perry played the first eight holes in 7 under, making the ace on the 188-yard fourth hole, and had two birdies on the back nine and closed with an 18-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th. He was at 14-under 130. Kevin Sutherland (65) and Scott Dunlap (67) were tied for second.
