Stone’s Throw puts sunshine in summer cocktail menu
Summer cocktail inspirations don’t get as direct (and essential) as Caleb Gutierrez’s motivations for a new lineup of seasonal sippers at Stone’s Throw bar 1417 Westheimer.
“We needed summer drinks so immediately I started going to fresh, citrusy ingredients,” said Gutierrez. “In the back of my head, I was thinking, ‘What would I want to drink by the beach or the pool?’”
Cocktail enthusiasts will be happy he went there. The new summer drinks sparkle with fresh citrus highs, bursts of juicy fruits and fizzy volleys of ginger beer. The Tiki Tossback combines vodka, coconut rum and Aperol with lime juice and tiki bitters. Stone’s Throw Summer Punch marries orange vodka, pisco and jasmine liqueur with lime juice and house-made ginger beer. The El Guapo takes reposado tequila and combines it with dessert pear syrup, lime juice and more of that ginger beer. And Keep the Faith shakes things up with a refreshing mixture of gin, Falernum, dry Curacao, lemon juice and tiki bitters. The drinks are priced between $8 and $11 (the punch goes for $28 for a half bowl or $50 for a full bowl).
Gutierrez said his top consideration with the new offerings was flavor. His second was that Stone’s Throw bartenders could quickly execute them at the high-volume bar. He appears to have achieved both goals: The drinks are craft-cocktail worthy; they’re also moving fast as perfect thirst quenchers during this terribly hot summer.
He shared this delicious summer sipper.
