Shortly thereafter his family moved to Seabrook Tx. Where he made his lifelong home. As a boy and young man he grew up fishing, shrimping, and crabbing Galveston Bay. He was an excellent boatman and sailor and had salt water in his blood. He truly loved Seabrook and the Bay. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor he immediately joined the Navy and went into the Submarine Service. He was 17. In 1945 he got out of the Navy and shortly after married Lavonnie Belle Bailey. 1950 proved to be quite a year for Elton, he graduated from the University of Houston with a business degree, his first child Melissa was born, he began to take over his fathers business,(Elton Porter Insurance) and last but not least got himself recalled for service for the Korean War. Never one to sit too long ,after Korea he hit the ground running. He built his Insurance business into the largest Marine Insurer in the Southwest United States. In the 1960s thru the 80s, if you owned a boat, you probably bought your insurance from him. But always his greatest passion and favorite pursuit was the city of Seabrook. He served on city council several times, was instrumental in getting them their first Water Distict, served on the Library Board, CCISD board member and at one time was the volunteer Fire Chief. His many other accomplishments include, Being the first president of the Boating and Trade association, lifetime Rotary club member, (50 years), Distinguished Alumni U of H and onetime president of same, and Seabrook Citizen of the year. Also a member of the elite Holland Club, (50 year Submariner). Over the years Elton started many small businesses, some of the time just to give a friend or family member a job. Just a short list, He owned a Nightclub, Boat Dealership, Mobile Home Company, Taxicab Business, (anyone remember Apollo Taxi?), and several construction companies.
