Texas’ top baby names

The swift and steady decline of Jose

- By Francisca Ortega francisca.ortega@chron.com

Poor Jose. After more than a decade at the top of Texas’ list of popular male baby names, its decline in the past few years has been swift and steady.

From 1996 to 2009, Jose was No. 1, meaning right now, there is likely at least one Texas teacher calling for “Jose” and attracting a crowd.

But in 2010 things changed. The ‘Twilight’ movies came out, and Texas, and the nation in general, became Team Jacob.

Jose never recovered, slipping from No. 2 to No. 4 in 2011. Noah, that biblical name from way back before the flood, is firmly planted at No. 1. Girls’ names 1.
