HomeAid project benefits Boys and Girls Country
HomeAid Houston has named 2016 its “Year of the Child,” as the agency’s project calendar reflects several construction and remodeling projects that will improve the housing situation for homeless children of all ages. Boys and Girls Country, a HomeAid project that is under way in Hockley, is a prime example.
HomeAid has teamed with builder captain Partners in Building to construct an 8,100-square-foot cottage that will house eight children from families in crisis. Partners in Building has recruited vendors and trades for donated materials and labor, and is leading the construction.
The children at Boys and Girls Country live with a married “Teaching Parent” and any children they may have, as well as two single Teaching Parents who raise these children as their own. This building has been named the Joanne H. Watford Cottage.
Donations have come from Theiss Plumbing, Whirlpool, Cemex, Avelino Flores, 1st Infiniti, Marek Brothers, Apex Foundation Limited, Cast Fireplaces and Shaw Carpet/Flooring Services.
The Boys and Girls Country program is made up of a network of 11 cottage families and an extended Christian neighborhood that supports the children as they learn and grow, provides them with educational and emotional support, holds them accountable to their peers and the greater community, and encourages them to dream and achieve big goals. Education is also a major priority for the kids and staff.
Boys and Girls Country was established in 1971 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity.
