No. 2 Baylor, No. 12 UT extend runs, improve to 8-0 in Big 12

WACO — Alexis Jones scored 16 points while playing with a swollen and blackened right eye as second-ranked Baylor stretched its winning streak to 17 games with a 79-73 win Saturday over No. 24 West Virginia.

Baylor (19-1, 8-0 Big 12) has won 54 consecutiv­e games at home since a loss to the Mountainee­rs on March 2, 2014.

West Virginia scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter, with Katrina Pardee making a jumper and then a 3-pointer with just under six minutes left to cut the gap to 65-61.

But Alexis Prince then made a layup after chasing down the loose ball of her own missed 3 for Baylor. Jones, who was head-butted by an Iowa State player in Wednesday’s game, stretched the lead to 69-61 on a jumper and finished with 7-of-14 shooting.

Teana Muldrow had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead West Virginia. TEXAS 77, TEXAS TECH 57

Joyner Holmes scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the No. 12 Longhorns to a victory over the Lady Raiders in Lubbock for its 12th straight win.

Texas extended its program-best Big 12 Conference start to 8-0. The Longhorns opened conference play 5-0 three times, the latest during the 2015-16 season.

Brooke McCarty had 14 points, and Ariel Atkins added 13 for Texas (14-4), which swept the season series against Texas Tech (11-7, 3-4) for the fourth consecutiv­e year.

Maya Hawkins had 15 points and seven assists, and the Owls defeated the Lady Eagles at Tudor Fieldhouse.
