BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jack Sock and Steve Johnson won their doubles match in three sets Saturday, sending the United States to the Davis Cup quarterfin­als with a 3-0 victory over Switzerlan­d.

Sock and Johnson, bronze medalists in men’s doubles at the Rio Olympics, beat Henri Laaksonen and Adrien Bossel 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Switzerlan­d was without the country’s two best players this weekend — 18time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and three-time major champ Stan Wawrinka.

The U.S. will travel to Australia for the April quarterfin­als. Australia advanced with a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

The Americans are 1584 all-time in Davis Cup ties when taking a 2-0 lead.

204,906 see An take Phoenix lead

Byeong Hun An took a one-stroke lead in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in front of a golfrecord crowd of 204,906.

The South Korean player shot a 6-under-par 65 at TPC Scottsdale to reach 16-under 197.

Scotland’s Martin Laird was second after a 65. Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama (68) was 12 under along with John Peterson (63), Canadian Graham DeLaet (65) and Michael Kim ( 66).

The event has drawn 596,880 for the first six days, setting records each day. With 70,000 to 90,000 expected Sunday, the tournament will shatter the overall record of 618,365 set last year.

Jailed Bowditch makes tee time

Scottsdale, Ariz., police said Bowditch had a bloodalcoh­ol level of more than 0.20 percent when he was taken into custody about 2 a.m. CST.

Responding to a 911 report about a truck “swerving all over the road,” officers observed the vehicle sit through two green lights without moving and then found the 33-year-old Australian asleep behind the wheel.

Bowditch missed the cut in the tournament, shooting his second consecutiv­e 3-over 74.

“I would like to apolo- gize to my family, friends and supporters, as well as the PGA Tour and Waste Management Phoenix Open for the incident reported today,” Bowditch said in a statement after meeting with PGA officials.

Arizona’s legal limit is 0.08. Penalties for a first offense for extreme DUI can include 30 days in jail.

Bowditch, who won the 2014 Valero Texas Open and the 2015 AT&T Byron Nelson, has missed six cuts in seven starts this season. In other news: • Sergio Garcia made a birdie putt from six feet in darkness to take a threeshot lead into the final day of the Dubai Desert Classic. Garcia finished with a pair of birdies for a 4-under 68, which gave him a three-round total of 16 under par. Henrik Stenson shot a 67 to move into second at 13 under. England’s Ian Poulter (67) and Thailand’s Prom Meesawat (68) are tied for third at 11 under.

Mets’ Flores wins arbitratio­n case

Infielder Wilmer Flores defeated the Mets in New York’s first salary arbitratio­n hearing since pitcher Oliver Perez won in 2008.

Flores was awarded a $2.2 million salary by arbitrator­s, who heard the case a day earlier. The Mets contended he should be paid $1.8 million. Flores made more than $526,000 last year and was eligible for arbitratio­n for the first time.

He played all four infield positions last season. He hit .267, matched his career high with 16 homers and had 49 RBIs.

Scelfo lands spot on UH staff

The University of Houston hired Chris Scelfo as offensive line coach to replace Darren Hiller, who reportedly will leave for Indiana after less than a month on the UH staff.

Scelfo, 53, who most recently served as an assistant coach for seven seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, was the head coach at Tulane, going 3657 from 1998-2006. He also has coached at Marshall and Georgia.

Torres’ 2 goals pace Dynamo

Erik Torres scored two of the Dynamo’s three second-half goals in a 5-0 victory over TexasRio Grande Valley in a preseason friendly at Edinburg.

Also scoring for the Dynamo were Mauro Manotas, Alex and Agus.

Royal Mo begins push for Derby

Royal Mo won the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes by 3½ lengths at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., giving owners Jerry and Ann Moss a second contender for the Kentucky Derby.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Royal Mo ran 11⁄ miles in 1:43.48. The 16 3-year-old colt earned 10 points toward qualifying for the Derby’s 20-horse field.

Gormley, the Mosses’ other 3-year-old, won the Sham Stakes by a head last month at Santa Anita. In other news: • Irish War Cry led all the way to upset Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire by 3¾ lengths in the $350,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Irish War Cry ran 11⁄ 16 miles to win his 3-year-old debut in 1:42.52.
