HomeAid to build day center for Family Promise of Lake Houston

-

Imagine you and your family are losing your home.

Everyday families are hit by unforeseen circumstances that become a crisis situation, often before they know it.

To help meet the immediate needs of these families who are both homeless or facing homelessness, Family Promise of Lake Houston (FPLH), provides a variety of programs designed to stabilize the family’s situation, while offering a place to collect themselves at a central location. This happens at the FPLH Day Center in Humble.

HomeAid Houston is working toward a partnership with FPLH to help construct a new 4,224-squarefoot Day Center that will replace the existing one and will double its current capacity.

“We are in the process of identifying a Builder Captain that will lead construction,” said Salty Thomason, president of HomeAid. “This is our second construction project for a Family Promise agency, and we are excited to get to work on this building to help prepare homeless and at risk families to become more independent and self- sustaining.”

The new Day Center, called Promise House, is designed to include counseling and administrative offices, locker rooms, bath facilities, a family room and kitchen, a child’s playroom, and a dining room and library. The Day Center offers a homelike setting to help instill a feeling of security and encouragement.

The FPLH program provides daily support and educational programs for 90 to 120 days that leads each family to permanent self-sufficiency. During the day, the families are at the Day Center working on weekly goal setting and life skills classes, a fast track GED certificate program, an individual education program and parenting and money management classes. During the evening, families reside at one of 13 host congregations located in Humble, Atascocita, Huffman, Kingwood and Porter.
