Jets reinforce secondary by acquiring cornerback Claiborne

-

NEW YORK — Morris Claiborne is getting a chance to revive his career and give the New York Jets’ secondary a boost.

The former Dallas Cowboys cornerback signed a one-year deal with the Jets on Saturday.

Claiborne (5-11, 192), the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, will help the Jets replace Darrelle Revis, who was released last week.

The Jets announced the acquisition by posting a photo of Claiborne, 27, signing his contract. Financial terms weren’t immediately available, but multiple outlets reported the deal is for $5 million.

Claiborne’s promising career has been hampered by several injuries since being a standout playmaker at LSU.

He played 15 games as a rookie after recovering from a surgically repaired wrist, but appeared in only 10 games the following season because of a dislocated left shoulder and a hamstring injury.

Claiborne’s third season lasted only four games because of a torn left patellar tendon. He returned to start 11 games in 2015 despite dealing with hamstring and ankle injuries.

He was an unrestricted free agent after that season, but he re-signed with Dallas on a one-year deal. Claiborne was again beset by injuries as he sat out the last nine regularseason games with a groin injury. Claiborne returned for the Cowboys’ NFC divisional-round playoff loss to Green Bay, but he left that game with a rib injury.

He has four interceptions, 26 passes defensed, a forced fumble and four fumble recoveries in 47 career NFL games.

Buccaneers get kicker Folk

Veteran kicker Nick Folk, 32, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 10-year pro spent the past seven seasons with the New York Jets, ranking second in franchise history with 172 field goals. He was 27-of-31 last season while converting 24 of 26 extra-point attempts.

Folk was a sixth-round draft pick in 2007 and spent his first three NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bills add Holmes to receiver corps

The Buffalo Bills addressed a key offseason need at receiver by agreeing to sign free agent Andre Holmes.

Holmes, 28, has five seasons of NFL experience, including the past four in Oakland where he played behind starters Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.

Holmes (6-5, 208 pounds) was limited to 14 catches for 126 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games last season.

His best year came in 2014, when he had 47 catches for a team-leading 693 yards and four TDs.
