ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The Chronicle reported this story over eight months using nearly 3,000 pages of trial transcripts, court documents, hospital records, Houston and Indiana police reports, crime-lab reports, prison records, emergency medical records and autopsy files. A reporter and photographer spent months trying to find the victims, many of whom remain homeless. They also interviewed police officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, crime-lab analysts, jurors, victims’ family members and friends, prison authorities and crime-victim advocates. Keith Edward Hendricks, in prison, declined an interview request. The Chronicle does not generally name rape victims to protect their identities. For this story, two women are identified with their consent. Other victims are identified only by their middle names. Jenny is identified by the name used publicly by her mother and attorneys.
