CHARLES AMBROSE BLOOM

1928-2017

Charles Ambrose (Chuck) Bloom passed on Thursday, April 6, 2017 in Plano, Texas. Chuck was born April 10, 1928 in DeWitt, Iowa and was the son of Joseph Albert Bloom and Florence Mary Conwell. He was raised in DeWitt, graduated from DeWitt High School in 1946, and served in the U.S. Army deployed to Japan after the war. Chuck worked thirty years for the Allstate Insurance Company and generously donated his time and talent to the Lion’s Club and Boy Scouts during this time. He was a dedicated fisherman and an avid bridge player. Chuck was a devout Catholic and faithful spiritual man all of his life. In retirement he supported the establishment of the Mission of Divine Mercy in New Braunfels, Texas, and worked as a volunteer in many service endeavors.

Chuck dearly loved his family and fathered three sons by his predeceased first wife, Dorothy Irene Austin Bloom of Quincy, Illinois, and has numerous grandchildren. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Verdine Owen Bloom (San Antonio, Texas), and survived his loving wife Joan Goodman Bloom. He is survived by his sons Charles Thomas (Tom) Bloom and wife Ande Bloom (Storrs, Connecticut), Mark Alan Bloom and wife Patricia Bloom (Houston, Texas), and Barry Douglas Bloom and wife Sheila Bloom (Plano, Texas). He is survived by his grandchildren Paul Nathan Bloom (Austin, Texas), Melica Lynn Bloom (Willimantic, Connecticut), Alexander Garrett Bloom (San Marcos, Texas), Logan Michael Bloom (Lubbock, Texas), Caylie Elizabeth Bloom (Houston, Texas), Carl Thomas Sullenberger (Denton, Texas), John Connor Bloom (Plano, Texas), Charles Malcolm Bloom (Plano, Texas), and Chandler Adam Bloom (Plano, Texas). Chuck was the youngest of nine siblings and survived all of them: Mary Frances Bloom, Joseph Bloom, Anna Alberta Marron, Thomas Alphonsus Bloom, Frances Aloysius (Frank) Bloom, Florence Adeline (Ki) Pavlica, Josephine Alice (Jo) Wuestenberg, and Louis Albert Bloom. Chuck has numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States, who dearly loved their “Uncle Bunk” and gathered in Galveston to celebrate his 80th birthday in 2008.

Visitation will be held in Houston on Tuesday evening, April 11, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1101 Antoine Drive, from 6 to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Houston’s St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, on Wednesday, April 12, at 10 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Drive. A remembrance gathering will be held in Plano on Tuesday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen Family Funeral Options, 2120 W Spring Creek Pkwy # E.
