Cumbie, UH blank Tulane; HBU routs Sam Houston State

NEW ORLEANS — Lefthander Trey Cumbie tossed a five-hitter and struck out a career-high 11, Connor Wong went 3-for-5, and the University of Houston shut out Tulane 4-0 on Saturday to clinch the teams’ American Athletic Conference series.

The victory came one day after the Cougars beat the Green Wave 15-3 in a game that was delayed by two hours because of rain and lightning in the area. That game included an 11-run ninth inning.

With Saturday’s win, UH improved to 33-17, remaining atop the AAC at 13-7.

Cumbie allowed just one walk while tossing 127 pitches to improve to 8-1 and earn his second complete game. HOUSTON BAPTIST 9 SAM HOUSTON ST. 1

Christian Thames tossed a four-hitter as the Huskies routed the Bearkats to clinch the teams’ Southland Conference series at Husky Field.

Thames (7-3) went the distance for the third time this season, allowing one unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks on 109 pitches.

Zane Otten went 3-for5 and scored twice, while Jake Pulcheon went 2-for3 with two RBIs for the Huskies (25-20, 17-9).

Bryce Johnson had the lone RBI for Sam Houston State (32-19, 16-10). MIDDLE TENNESSEE ST. 13 RICE 1

The Blue Raiders scored early and often in a rout of the Owls at Reckling Park to even the Conference USA series.

Middle Tennessee State’s Cody Puckett had a lot to do with cooling Rice’s bats. He allowed four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in seven shutout innings.

Meanwhile, the Blue Raiders torched Rice for 16 hits.

The Owls (23-28, 13-13) will attempt to win their fourth consecutiv­e series in Sunday’s rubber match. MISSISSIPP­I 6 TEXAS A&M 4

The No. 20 Aggies’ bullpen was roughed up for four runs in the eighth inning as the Rebels rallied for a victory in Oxford, Miss. Walker Pennington had pair of RBIs for Texas A&M (35-16, 15-11 Southeaste­rn Conference). OKLAHOMA 9, TCU 8

Renae Martinez crushed a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the No. 24 Sooners stunned the No. 5 Horned Frogs (36-12, 16-7 Big 12) in Norman, Okla. BAYLOR 3, OKLAHOMA ST. 2

Montana Parsons tossed six shutout innings, Aaron Dodson and Davis Wendzel homered, and the Bears (31-17, 10-10 Big 12) defeated the Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla. LAMAR 14 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 8

Robin Adames had six RBIs, and the Cardinals (31-21, 14-12 Southland) beat the Lumberjack­s (2625, 14-12) in Beaumont.
