Walter Veltz, Sr., 82, of Houston, Texas, entered into rest June 5, 2017. He was born in Crowley, Louisiana on February 9, 1935 to parents Freddie Sr. and Pearl Veltz. Walter attended Lincoln High School from 1941 to 1954 in Port Arthur, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his Country from 1954 to 1957, earning the rank of Sergeant in 1956. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas from 1957 to 1959. While attending college, Walter worked for Gulf Oil Corp from 1957 to 1958 and the U.S. Department of Commerce from 1959 to 1963. Walter was employed as an engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1963 until he retired in 1990.

Walter served his church as a member of the Stewardshi­p, Knights of Columbus; 3rd Degree-Council 7728, Knights of Columbus; 4th Degree Assembly 2243, Eucharisti­c Minister, Lector, Disciples in Mission, and Pastoral Council.

Walter was active in his Missouri City community. From 1996 to 2008, he served as a grandparen­t volunteer at Quail Valley Middle School, Elkins High School, and Marshall High School and received a Volunteer of the Year Award in 2001. He had a positive impact on many young lives though his daily actions.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Shirley; daughters: Italia (John), Yulanda (Mark), Janice, Rachel, Margaret and Pamela; sons: Hiram, Walter Jr., Daniel, and Kenneth (Tammy); nineteen grandchild­ren; twenty-four great-grandchild­ren; two great-great-grandchild­ren; brothers: Carlton and Joseph; sisters: Josephine and Helen; and two special caregivers/ daughters; Marlene Prevot and Sheila Castillo. He also leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Freddie Sr. and Pearl, and brothers, Louis and Freddie Jr.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2017 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 11:00am at American Heritage Funeral Home with a committal service following, to the Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
