BE PART OF A BIGGER MISSION

-

Most of us want our work to have purpose. We want to like what we do and feel good about it at the end of the day, knowing we’ve made a positive contribution to society, no matter how small. Yet, only 30 percent of Americans say they feel happy and engaged at work. If you’re not one of the 30 percent, it’s time for a change. Harris Health employs about 8,200 people and is a community-based health system that includes Ben Taub Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, as well as 19 community health centers, six same-day clinics, five school-based clinics, a dental center, a dialysis center, and one rehabilitation and specialty hospital. While it hasn’t yet achieved a 100 percent job-happiness rate (what most companies pursue), it does create an environment for happiness to thrive. Harris Health’s mission is to improve the community’s health by delivering high-quality care and by training the next generation of health professionals. Employees—from RNs to receptionists—who understand they are part of that mission can’t help but find purpose in their jobs. “Harris Health is my family,” said Ada Amaya, a nurse patient educator at LBJ Hospital. “This is my home, and I love coming to work. Anyone who serves the people we serve here has a huge heart. They have love and passion for their profession.” Investing in employees and the community Harris Health employees contribute to a legacy that aims to push the quality of community care forward. As a public health system, Harris Health cares for the uninsured, underinsured and indigent population—an often overlooked and under-cared for population. “When I came to Harris Health in 2011, it hit me strongly that we have a large population of people that have no source of care,” said Maureen S. Padilla, senior vice president of nursing and chief nurse executive at Harris Health System. “These people need compassion.” Padilla leads a nursing program within Harris Health that is well known for its excellence and commitment to professional development. Harris Health is one of the largest systems in the United States—and the first in Harris County—designated as a Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Harris Health also provides extensive professional development support. By taking advantage of these resources, nurses have worked their way up from entry-level spots to executive positions, all at Harris Health. Employees care about the community and each other Teamwork, a passion for innovation, and respect lie at the heart of Harris Health’s culture. If you care about people—including coworkers and patients of all nationalities—you’ll thrive at Harris Health. As senior interpreter, language access services for Ben Taub Specialty Clinics, Lawrence “Zo” Ruiz speaks with and for up to 40 patients every day. More than half of Harris Health’s patients are Hispanic, and many of them only speak Spanish. Ruiz and other interpreters don’t just translate language—they are a voice for patients. “I meet people who walk through the door without a voice,” said Ruiz. “To be able to help them speak for themselves, to communicate their anxiety, their pain, or their doubts . . . you feel this sense of a burden falling off their shoulders.” Harris Health’s people drive its success, and that success includes a long list of awards for excellence in patient care, cardiac care, cancer prevention, stroke response and care, and community service. And, Harris Health compensates its employees’ hard work by offering a generous benefits package and other perks. Do you want to look forward to coming to work like Ada Amaya? Harris Health is hiring for a wide range of positions and has jobs available in the following departments: • Nursing • Support services (cooks, food service, floor techs) • Professional (counselors, data analysts, facility engineers) • Management • Information Technology (business analysts, ETL developers) • Clerical and Administrative (call center representatives, lead patient access representatives, clerks)
