Corporate campuses part of the mix

Dand CEO David E. Harvey Jr. said.

“We do a lot of listening to find out what their culture is so we can do it their way.”

The company, founded by his father David E. Harvey Sr. and global developer Gerald Hines 60 years ago, earned the No. 9 spot on the Chronicle 100 private company list after pulling in $1.2 billion in revenue in 2016. Revenue fell from $1.9 billion in 2015 and is projected to total just under $1 billion this year.

Harvey runs the company with his business partner, Joseph A. Cleary Jr. Both have 10 siblings, attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and played West University Little League together, and joined Harvey in 1976.

The company builds in other regions, including Austin, San Antonio and the Washington, D.C., area. Of its 700 employees, 500 are in Houston.

While Houston-area office construction has contracted along with the fortunes of the energy industry, Harvey this year broke ground on corporate campuses for HP and the American Bureau of Shipping in Springwoods Village.

Harvey wrapped up several high-profile projects recently: Hines’ 609 Main skyscraper and energy company Hilcorp’s headquarters downtown, and buildings in the Galleria area for Amegy Bank and BHP Billiton.

Among its apartment projects, Market Square Tower has gained attention for its clear-bottomed pool 40 floors above the street.

It finished a single-story industrial complex spanning more than 4 million square feet for airconditioning maker Daikin Industries in Waller.

New buildings such as 609 Main are creating opportunities for more interior construction work, Harvey said. The company is handling projects for anchor tenant United Airlines and other companies in the 48-story building.
