Geometric designs convey feel of planning, culture

- BY VALERIE SWEETEN

Design trends come and go, but an easy way to make an impact on a living space is with accents that can make a room stand out especially with ones that can take on so many different looks.

An easy way to approach accent touches is incorporating geometric designs from ceiling to the floor. It’s also great for directing the eye to color, fabrics, sculptures, art and even furniture.

According to Vogue.com’s article, The Home Decorating and Interior Design Trends to Look for in 2017, using patterns in geometric designs is an easy way to create a home that feels curated and can also speak to ancient cultures whether African or Asian patterns.

Lauren Rackley, design studio manager at Pottery Barn in Town & Country, said geometrics are a good fit in prints, flooring, drapes, textiles, figurines, metals and even framed and canvas art. Starting with a neutral palette, accessories like this can be an excellent way to brighten spaces.

“You can bring in more color that way especially if you like to switch out with the seasons,” Rackley said. Using geometric patterns is one of the hottest 2017 trends in decorating as reported by www.Fishpools.co.uk. Don’t be afraid to play with colors, prints and textures with your patterns and shapes even in statement furniture pieces. Patterned designs, which can add a modern flair, are an exciting way to integrate everything from bold hexagons, funky chevrons, colorful checkerboards and colors in every shape and form.

Ebony Malone, home stylist at West Elm at CityCentre, said layering with geometric designs begins by starting with a neutral such as charcoal, white or black and then adding on.

“Have fun whether it be a planter or whatever inspires you or gets the look you’re going for. You never know what you’re going to be inspired by for the look of a room,” Malone said.

Blend colors on tiles, flooring, windows and even walls. Find a spot for either a bold or indiscreet pop of design

in nearly any room of your home, and then mix and match elements to create a special ambience.

ElleDecor.com’s 9 Ways to Decorate with Geometric Patterns, has decorating tips with wallpaper, lampshades, upholstery and even getting creative with bookshelves and lighting.

Get creative with your decorating approach because geometrics are versatile. It can be a prominent part of the room or a smaller feature with a modern approach.

“You can have an asymmetrical pillow, use 3D graphics or add a pop of color with curtains, a concrete vase, throws or a rug. It can be in the dining room, sunroom or wherever and can be the focal point. A rug is a great complement to any home and gives an upgraded look,” Malone said. Even delicate patterns can be as effective

and beautiful as sharp, strong ones. The goal is to keep a design clean and elegant.

Malone said it’s about finding the right balance for you. “You have to figure out what you love,” she said.
