Lennar/Village Builders begins HomeAid work

-

HomeAid Houston, a 501(c)(3) charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA), is continuing their partnership with Boys and Girls Country as they begin construction of HomeAid’s second 8,100-square-foot cottage on the Hockley campus that will house eight children from families in crisis. Lennar/Village Builders is also joining the team as the builder captain for the project with Marco Cordon, director of construction leading the way. Lennar/Village Builders is recruiting vendors and trades to donate materials and labor to assist in the construction.

This new facility has been named the Hamill Cottage with funding for its construction provided to Boys and Girls Country by the Hamill Foundation.

“Our partnership with HomeAid Houston allows us to help provide a beautiful place to call home for some kids dealing with tremendous challenges,” said Cordon. “We are honored to be able provide our services and experience on this ambitious project.”

Boys and Girls Country was established in 1971. Their mission is to change the lives of children from families in crisis by loving and nurturing them in a Christian home environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults. Children are from the greater Houston area, which includes 13 counties.

Located 35 miles northwest of Houston, Boys and Girls Country has capacity to serve 48 boys and 40 girls, ages 5-18, for a total of 88 children at any one time.

“HomeAid is both honored and thrilled to collaborate with Lennar/ Village Builders for this second cottage,” said Salty Thomason, president of HomeAid Houston. “This new project is a tremendous opportunity to continue the momentum we have since HomeAid recently completed the first cottage with Partners in Building as that Builder Captain. We are excited to watch the construction progress from the ground up.”

Forms have been set and the foundation is being poured. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“Lennar/Village Builders is grateful to HomeAid Houston for introducing us to Boys and Girls Country where children learn what it means to be surrounded by the love and comfort of home and family,” said Don Luke, division president.

HomeAid was started in 2003, and the first shelter was dedicated in 2005. Since then, 42 projects have been completed, adding more than 437 beds and $12.6 million in real estate construction and improvements to Houston’s homeless community.
