Highlander­s clinch district championsh­ip, headed to playoffs

The Woodlands wrapped up the outright District 12-6A title on Friday evening with a 58-0 victory over crosstown rival College Park at Woodforest Bank Stadium.

The No. 8 state-ranked Highlander­s improved 7-1 this season and completed district play with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Woodlands has now won six consecutiv­e league titles and ninth over the past 10 seasons.

The Highlander­s begin the Class 6A Division playoffs this weekend.

College Park, meanwhile, concluded its first season under first-year head coach Lonnie Madison with a 1-8 overall record and an 0-6 mark in district play.

Elsewhere in the Montgomery County: I New Caney clinches share of district title

New Caney clinched a share of the District 21-5A title for the second consecutiv­e season on Friday evening, defeating Crosby 63-38 on the road.

The loss at Cougar Stadium for Crosby snapped a 27-game home winning streak.

The Eagles improved to 7-2 overall and 7-1 in district play with the victory. New Caney will begin the Class 5A playoffs next week and are looking for their second-ever postseason victory after winning in the bi-district round last season.

New Caney senior quarterbac­k Jordan Cooper had a huge night as he threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 207 yards and three scores.

Freshman rusher Anthony Robles ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Jones also had a rushing touchdown for the Eagles.

Sophomore two-way player Dwight McGlothern had five receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

The 63 points scored by the Eagles is tied for the second-most in a single game in school history. New Caney previously scored 63 points in 2015 in a non-district game against Huffman-Hargrave. The school record is 64 points, which was scored in 1975.

New Caney will play Vidor in the Division II Region III-5A bi-district. The game is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Galena Park ISD Stadium. Magnolia West falls, still co-district champs

The Magnolia West Mustangs lost its first game of the season Friday night as Huntsville took a 20-3victory at Mustang Stadium. The loss clinches a share of the District 205A title for both teams.

It is the first district title in program history for the Mustangs (8-1, 6-1).

Magnolia West is set to host Leander Rouse in the Division I Region III-5A bi-district game. The game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Mustang Stadium. Porter finishes third in league

The Spartans wrapped up the regular season Friday night with a 10-3 District 21-5A victory at Texan Drive Stadium.

Porter (7-3, 6-2) is heading to the playoffs for the second straight year season and also the second time in school history.

Barbers Hill’s loss combined with Kingwood Park’s win over Humble eliminates the Eagles from playoff contention. They end the season 6-3 overall and 5-3 in district play.

Porter kicker Roosevelt Arizpe opened up scoring at the 3:36 mark of the first quarter with a 26-yard field goal.

Carlos Norman then made it 10-0 Spartans on a 2-yard touchdown run.

That’s all the Spartans needed as Barbers Hill got its lone touchdown on the ensuing drive on a 10-yard touchdown run.

The 10-7 halftime score stood as the final score.

Porter totaled 174 yards of total offense. Zane Russell was 8 of 19 for 91 yards. Norman had a team-high 33 receiving yards and 52 rushing yards.

Porter is set to play Nederland in the Division I Region III-5A bi-district round.
