Species of concern
The following invasive aquatic species have not yet established themselves in the U.S., but the government is concerned about them arriving via ballast water discharge. GOLDEN MUSSEL Native To: China and southeastern Asia Means of Introduction: Has invaded South America through ballast water, and it could be introduced to North America through ballast water. Impact: Threatens native biodiversity, and it could suffocate and starve out native bivalves, such as clams, oysters, mussels and scallops. KILLER SHRIMP Native To: Eastern Europe Means of Introduction: Could enter the U.S. through ballast water discharge. Impact: In Europe, killer shrimp populations have caused significant ecological disruption by reducing biodiversity.
