- BY VALERIE SWEETEN

Bringing a touch of whimsy to a room can lighten a mood, shine a new light on a space and even make a collectible get noticed.

Whimsical, defined as lightly fanciful when it comes to decorations, can range from vintage décor to recycled wood wall hangings, folk-inspired art, crafty ceramics and playful furniture.

Embracing touches of whimsy is one more way to incorporate your personality in your space when decorating.

On tabletops, utilize vases, metallic accents, woodgrain designs or art pieces in all shapes and sizes in virtually any room you like.

Houston’s Ken Kehoe of Ken Kehoe and Company said using whimsical items is easy to do when planning your approach.

“It’s best to treat whimsical items like a spice, with your room being the recipe,” Kehoe said. “When you are making chili many spices can be thrown in, but most rooms need just a touch here and there of that special flavor you’re seeking.”

At HomeEdit.com’s article, Designers Embrace Whimsical Home Decorating Ideas, get inspired with fanciful objects such as braided rugs, beaded mushrooms and giant sharks where modern designers take on home decorating concepts indulging innovative ideas. Find furniture made from unconventional materials, and adorn walls with unique coverings to add more accent as well. Size doesn’t have to limit your piece of whimsical inserts added Kehoe.

Inexpensive metal art on a wall, artificial flowers on a table, large French carvings made into sconces, and even a heavy stone hand rising off an antique chest can complement a room without compromising the overall design. Collectible vintage plates, typically found at thrift stores or garage sales, can cover a wall or decorate shelving with a grouping. Vintage gorgeous old keys can be repainted for a display set. Larger pieces, such as a crate boot rack or pallet boards, can turn into organizers either for stacking or displaying. Vintage books are also an easy find, and add distinct charm to any room.

“Whimsical accents are easiest to place when they peek out into the room from a cozy corner or tidy shelf, although a big piece can certainly claim center of attention when an overall design calls for it,” Kehoe said.

So, don’t worry about thinking outside of the box because whimsical items are there for a reason. These are the types of things that can start conversations, spark a collection or showcase a one-of-a-kind art find. Any room can be game for a little bit of whimsy
