Robert Glasper is coming home — and releasing a lot of music

- By Andrew Dansby andrew.dansby@chron.com

If you’re going by recordings under his own name, Robert Glasper has been quiet since releasing “ArtScience” in late 2016. But the Grammy-winning Houston native has a number of plates in the air, including a hometown show next month.

Glasper this week announced a new concert DVD, “Robert Glasper Experiment: Live,” out March 16. (The digital release will be April 6.)

The concert film was assembled from shows in New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Rotterdam and pulls from his jazz/hiphop/R&B fusion albums “Black Radio” and “Black Radio 2,” along with some interesting covers, like Radiohead’s “Packt Like Sardines in a Crushed Tin Box” and Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day.”

Bilal, Wayne Brady and Lalah Hathaway are among those making guest appearances.

On April 7, Glasper will return to Houston to play the Bayou City Music Series on a bill with the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts’ Jazz Sextet at Emancipation Park.

He also has a new collaborative album with rapper Common and drummer/producer Karriem Riggins. The trio collaborated on the song “Letter to the Free” for the TV documentary “13th.” The song won them an Emmy, so the trio decided to keep working together. They’ve taken the name August Greene and will release “August Greene” on Friday through Amazon. You can find samples of the music online.

And if you missed it, Glasper and fellow HSPVA alum and drummer Kendrick Scott were part of the new Blue Note All Stars, a super group put together by the venerable jazz label. Last fall they released “Our Point of View.”
