Deer hunts and bump stocks
Sarcasm
Regarding “Enhancing deer hunts” (Page A16, Friday), thanks to the letter writer for the amusing and cleverly sarcastic letter about the importance of semiautomatic rifles and bump stocks for deer hunting. I’d like to suggest taking this line of thought one step further; why not legalize rocket-propelled grenades for deer hunting? Then, even an incompetent marksman would stand a “sporting chance” of killing an entire herd.

Satire
Silly me. I had been living under the assumption that the allure of deer hunting was in the chase, the comradery and the opportunity to take a trophy deer. I didn’t know that the real purpose was to kill the entire cast of Bambi! My thanks to the letter writer for setting me straight and adding some humor to an otherwise gloomy, rainy day in Houston.
I don’t hunt to provide the meat on my family’s table. Maybe the writer does; but I hope that he was writing tongue-incheek about the advantages of semi-automatic weapons and bump stocks vs. bolt-action rifles for deer hunting in Texas.

By the numbers
The letter writer perfectly demonstrated, in his letter, the ignorance he has and that many have on the issue of “bump stocks.” He also demonstrated his poor sportsmanship and subpar hunting abilities as well.
What’s the point of hunting if he intends to kill his prey with the spraying down the deer like he’s one of Al Capone’s hitmen killing members of the opposing mob gangster style? That’s not hunting, that’s killing by numbers. Bump stocks are meant for mass murdering, and the writer’s weak defense of them is sad. Maybe he’ll buy some grenades and use those to hunt with. That way he can get all of the deer in one explosion. The analogy is the same.

Legal hunt?
I don’t think I’ve ever been so infuriated in all my life. The letter writer wants a “sporting chance” to kill as many deer at one time as possible by using his bump stocked semiautomatic rifle.
What about the deer’s sporting chance? Unless he is providing meat to a charitable organization that feeds the poor, there is absolutely no reason to kill multiple deer at one time.
Plus he wouldn’t even have time to figure out if all the deer in the group were legal. I really have to wonder about his mindset.
