CARL GILBERT BUTTERWORTH

1927-2018

-

Carl Gilbert Butterworth passed on to Heaven on March 6 2018.

He was born March 10, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to Albert Butterworth and Mabel Siglin. He then moved to Atlanta where he graduated from the Technical High School. He was eager to join the war and convinced his mother to let him enlist. At the age of 17 he joined the navy during WWII & was on Communication Unit 412. He began his service in Pearl Harbor and moved to Shanghai, along with other places in Asia. Because he was in the communications division, he was able to work in an area he enjoyed while serving his country.

This led to his lifelong hobby of ham radios. Carl loved his ham radios & spent a great deal of his earlier years in his “shack” talking to people around the world. You may have known him as W5UPR.

Carl was an avid traveler & loved to tell stories of other cultures and adventures. He was in South America a lot for business and traveled for fun with his wife Flo & their friends. He loved talking about taking the trains in Europe & not knowing where they were going to stay – the adventure of it!

Carl had a distinguished & decades long career as a Fire Sprinkler Engineer in the field of fire protection services. He was a hard worker & continued to stay engaged in his career even past retirement.

When he was 88 years old, Carl was diagnosed with colon cancer. The doctors told him to prepare but he decided he wanted to live to be 90 years old & that was what he did. He left us a few days before turning 91; an example of Carl exceeding his goals.

Carl loved his family, golf, a good, cheap glass of scotch, his cigars, & sitting outside watching the news.

He is survived by his loving wife Flo Spalding & his four children: Michael Butterworth (Dayna Kinder), Michele Boudreaux (Glen), Jeff Butterworth, & Robert Butterworth (Diane). He is loved also by his four grandchildren: Shelia Boudreaux (Andres Salaverria), Glen Boudreaux Jr, Michelle Coleman (Howard), Jason Butterworth & step grandchildren John and Jennifer. He is also survived by great grandchildren Chloe, Ashton, Kayla & GreatGreat grandson Kayden. When Carl entered into marriage with Flo, her family welcomed him lovingly. He is survived by his step children: Lori Harmon (J) & Dan Spalding (Gabriela) & step-grandchildren: Trey Harmon, Lukas Harmon & Lauren Kinsey.

Carl was predeceased by his parents & his 1st wife, Louise Butterworth.

A memorial service will be held, Friday, March 23, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church, 22601 Lutheran Church Rd, Tomball, Tx. 77377. Pastor Doug Dommer officiating. Doors will open at 12:30 for family visitation. Reception to follow. Private Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to your favorite charity in honor of Carl Butterworth.
