‘Be Best’ program, Senate hearing make headlines

-

First lady Melania Trump’s unveiling of her formal platform kicked off Washington’s news cycle last week. The first lady took to the Rose Garden on Monday to reveal “Be Best” as her signature program. Her agenda aims to help children by improving well-being, fighting opioid abuse and promoting positivity on social media.

As the week continued, CIA director nominee Gina Haspel underwent a confirmation hearing Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Her momentum appeared favorable despite a denunciation from Sen. John McCain, who said Haspel’s “refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying.” The White House refused to apologize later in the week after an aide dismissed McCain’s comments by saying, “It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.” McCain is undergoing treatment for brain cancer.

Rep. Devin Nunes, a prominent critic of the Russia probe, met Thursday with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Thursday to discuss his subpoena for documents tied to what he says are violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Intelligence officials, however, worry revealing the records could put sources at risk.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen reportedly told colleagues she was considering resigning after an argument with President Donald Trump, sources said. From online and wire reports
