Trump to meet with Kim amid U.N., Canada friction

-

Foreign policy went to the forefront last week for the Trump administration, with a focus on North Korea, the United Nations and Canada.

After weeks of backand-forth, President Donald Trump appears to be back on for a Singapore summit Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Democrats signaled reservations about Trump’s readiness after comments he made Thursday.

“I’m very well-prepared. I don’t think I have to prepare very much,” Trump said. “It’s about attitude.”

Meanwhile, the administration’s border separation policy caused friction as the U.N. human rights office demanded Tuesday that the U.S. “immediately halt” the practice.

“There is nothing normal about detaining children,” said a spokeswoman.

In another development, Trump reportedly had a telephone argument with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over steel tariffs imposed at the end of last month.

Trudeau has denounced Trump’s use of national security grounds to justify the tariffs.

“The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable,” he told NBC.

During the phone call, Trump reportedly justified his concerns by saying, “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?”

In actuality, Britain, not Canada, burned down the White House during the War of 1812.
