PADRES’ TORRES SUSPENDED
On Friday, San Diego Padres LHP Jose Torres accepted a suspension without pay for the rest of the year after his December arrest on domestic violence charges.
Commissioner Rob Manfred said the penalty is retroactive to June 5 and covers 100 games. The suspension will cost the reliever $349,052 of his $550,200 salary.
Torres, who hasn’t pitched this season, has agreed not to appeal and will take part in an evaluation and treatment program.
LOS ANGELES DODGERS
RHP Walker Buehler has bruised ribs, but scans and X-rays showed no further damage after the rookie was lifted from a start with pain in his side Friday.
Buehler is uncertain how much time he’ll miss or if he’ll need to go on the DL.
He was hit by Trevor Story’s line drive in a game against Colorado on May 21 and made three starts after that.
NEW YORK YANKEES
RHP Masahiro Tanaka was put on the 10-day DL, a day after the pitcher strained both hamstrings running the bases during the Subway Series opener against the Mets.
Tanaka was scoring his first major league run on Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly during the sixth inning when he felt stiffness in both hamstrings. Tanaka was pulled after that.
A 29-year-old in his fifth big league season, Tanaka is 7-2 with a 4.58 ERA in 13 starts. Tanaka missed a turn in 2015 after straining his right hamstring while running to first after bunting at Citi Field.
WASHINGTON NATIONALS
RHP Stephen Strasburg will go on the DL with right shoulder inflammation, manager Dave Martinez said.
Martinez said there was no timetable on Strasburg’s return. The righthander left his start against San Francisco after two innings and underwent an MRI on Saturday.
“I thought just the inflammation was a good thing and nothing else was wrong structurally,” Martinez said.
The three-time All-Star is 6-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts this year. It is his sixth stint on the DL in the past four seasons.
