GOLDIE MANN

1922-2018

-

Our beloved Goldie Gertrude Miron Mann passed away on June 3, 2018. We are in awe that someone so modest could have had such an outsized impact on those who knew and loved her, and on her extended community. Goldie was born on June 29, 1922, to Hessie and Herschel Miron (originally Mirochnik). Born in Houston, she was the 7th of nine children. Goldie was a standout from her earliest days, when she helped her parents in their Central Houston grocery store. She skipped 2 grades and graduated high school at age 15 with many honors. Although accepted to Rice University, financial constraints sent her into the job market, working for the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and publisher David White (Jewish Digest, Jewish Herald-Voice).

In 1948 Goldie married Seymour Mann, and they had 4 children. After the children were grown, she and Seymour traveled the world. Goldie and Seymour were founding members of Congregation Emanu El. Goldie was a stalwart volunteer with the Greater Houston Food Bank. For many years she typed Braille textbooks for the Lighthouse For The Blind. Goldie gardened, did beautiful needlework, and was a competition-level bridge player.

Goldie is survived by sons David (Janet Benjamin), Carl (Margaux), Monte (Joy Aiken), and daughter Roberta (John Lavin), as well as grandchildren Nicholas Mann , Emily Mann and Kedra Van Putten.

The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to the Greater Houston Food Bank, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, or Congregation Emanu El.
