Vernon Robert Sanders, 91, of Houston, passed away peacefully June 5, 2018. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado on December 15, 1926. And was married to Marilyn Louise Von Gundy for 64 years. Vern had a career in engineerin­g for Shell Chemical as a Project Engineer and was Awarded Senior Engineer.

He was a Master Mason, Aurora, Colo., an active participan­t in the U.S.S. Providence, World War II Reunion Group and a member of “The Dirty 30” and Dead Pekker Club. He loved to tinker in his garage and in time became a master wood carver of ducks, bowls, and unique and beautiful furniture.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his parents Marion and Gyneth Sanders, and sister Vera Lynn Morrell. His grandparen­ts Ewell and Bessie Given and his aunts, uncles, and cousins played a big role in his childhood. At 17, he joined the Navy. After the Navy, he received his Chemical Engineerin­g Degree at the University of Denver.

He is survived by son Michael V. Sanders and wife Berta of Zachary, Louisiana, daughter Gail L. Zuzula and husband Mike of Mill Creek, Washington, seven grandchild­ren: David Sanders and wife Catherine, Jesse Sanders, Molly Lau and husband Sam, Robert Sanders and wife Lexy, Michael Zuzula, Chris Zuzula, and Nicholas Zuzula. Eight great-grandchild­ren: Luna Sanders, Isabella Sanders, Cason Sanders, Parker Sanders, Maggie Sanders, Laila Sanders, Marley Lau, and Owen Lau were a big part of his life.

A reception will be held in Vern’s honor at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home on June 13, 2018 and a graveside service at the Houston National Cemetery at 1:00 pm following the reception.
