Incarnate Word ties for first in SLC

SAN ANTONIO — Jon Copeland threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns as Incarnate Word rolled past Sam Houston State 43-26 on Saturday to pull into a tie atop the Southland Conference standings.

UIW (5-4, 5-2) moved into a first-place tie with McNeese and Nicholls in the conference standings after McNeese lost to Southeaste­rn Louisiana 23-6 on Saturday.

The Incarnate Word defense thwarted the Bearkats all day, forcing seven turnovers, to secure Incarnate Word’s first victory over SHSU (5-4, 4-3) in seven tries.

KHA’Darris Davis accounted for 275 total yards and three touchdowns, and the Hornets beat the Tigers in Montgomery, Ala.

Texas Southern (2-7, 1-5 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) never led. Bobby Hartzog Jr. had four receptions for 113 yards, Tren’Davian Dickson had 103 yards receiving and a touchdown, and Brad Woodard carried 17 times for 72 yards and two scores.

NICHOLLS ST. 41 HOUSTON BAPTIST 20

Chase Fourcade threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores as the Colonels rolled over the Huskies at Husky Stadium.

Bailey Zappe hit Terry Tillmon on a 67-yard scoring strike, Jake Blanco ran a blocked punt back 40 yards for a score, and Jarreth Sterns ran in from the 1 for Houston Baptist (1-8, 0-7 Southland), which has now lost 17 straight conference games.

Quitten Brown ran for two touchdowns, and the Tigers held on to beat the Panthers in Jackson, Miss.

Trazon Connley threw three touchdown passes for Prairie View A&M (3-6, 2-3 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

LAMAR 38 CENTRAL ARKANSAS 24

Jordan Hoy threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, and the Cardinals held on to upset the Bears in Conway, Ark. Lamar (5-4, 4-3 Southland) needs one more win to post its first winning record since 2014.
