The Children’s Museum of Houston is always ahead of the curve.

“Americas No. 1 Children’s Museum,” according to Parents magazine, got a head start on Día de los Muertos with its recent fundraiser. Co-chairs

and Caroline and John Harrell clinched more than $1 million toward outreach programs. In 2018 alone, more than 854,000 visitors, including 541,000 youngsters, experienced the Museum District’s child-centered learning attraction.

But make no mistake: This Day of the Dead-inspired gala was purely adults-only.

The annual fundraiser, which returned to the Corinthian downtown, proved an excellent opportunity to test-drive Halloween costumes. Many of the evening’s 550 attendees donned scarily chic his-and-her “La Calavera Catrína/Catrín” ensembles for the occasion.

Picture a ballroom full of elegant skeletons — skull-painted faces, floral headbands, top hats, lace and “exposed” bone at every turn.

Bergner & Johnson Design collaborated with Jackson & Co. on décor and menu to match. Suspended confetti-colored papel picado banners hung from the ceiling. Pork chalupas, stuffed jalapeños, white chocolate tres leches, flan, chicken empanadas and late-night churros kept dinner service upbeat and festive.

And by the time Audio House took the stage, cheers and Hornitos tequila shots peppered the crowd. Underwriting chairs Lilly and Harrison Cullen and Cassie and John Milam celebrated a job well done.
