Why your company should strive to be a Top Workplace

- — Al Lewis, Business Editor

With the Texas unemployment rate at 4 percent, anyone who wants to work probably already has a job, so why would they want to work for your company?

Thriving companies find an answer to this question because they know the competition for excellent employees is fierce.

The Houston Chronicle’s annual Top Workplaces ranking showcases regional companies that are the very best at maintaining a desirable working environment.

Research has long showed people quit their jobs not so much because of the pay, but because they dislike their bosses and their working environments. Smart companies take pains to ensure this doesn’t happen to them.

The formula is a simple cliche: Treat your employees well so that they treat your customers well. But too often, competing agendas get in the way.

Top Workplaces is about the companies that manage to overcome these obstacles. It is a celebration of companies that are constantly seeking new ways to keep their employees empowered and engaged. And the examples they offer are instructive for any company.

The Houston Chronicle teamed up with Energage to conduct the rankings, which were based on surveys from 80,698 Houstonarea employees.

Making the Top Workplaces list, at any rank, shows a company cares exceptionally about its people.

Congratulations to all the winners.
