Peace on Earth

My mother voted Republican. My father was a Democrat. During one particularly heated election, canvassers knocked on our door and asked if they could put campaign signs for the Republican candidate in our yard. We lived across the street from a polling place, Red Elementary. Mom said yes. When Dad got home, he called the Democratic campaign and asked them to come put signs in our yard, too. We were the only house on the block with signs backing both Nixon and McGovern. Despite that episode, I never remember my parents arguing over politics at the dinner table — much less the Thanksgiving table. Luckily, the happiness of the holidays follows close on the heels of Election Day. This month and next, families and friends will come together for gratitude, worship, merriment and revelry. Here’s to making those get-togethers conflict-free. In our holiday issue, we have lots of ideas for harmonious entertaining, decorating and gift giving. Home writer Diane Cowen introduces us to Martha and Walter White, Memorial homeowners who were ready for a new chapter in their lives. Having grown kids and grandchildren on the way didn’t mean they wanted to downsize or simplify, though. It meant finally getting the home they wanted that they could decorate in a more sophisticated way — including starting a new art collection. In their inviting home, they can entertain on a whole new level. Society writer Amber Elliott took a millennial approach to entertaining when she threw a sky-high dinner party for 24 “it” girls at Kirby Collection’s 25th-floor Sky View Lounge. She shares her best hostess secrets. What to wear to such a soiree? Fashion writer Joy Sewing documents the holiday trend: blinding sparkle. Sequins, glitter and metallics shimmered down the fall runways. Not your style? Luxe Western wear is another staple this season. Cowboy boots, fringe, turquoise, gaucho hats and prairie the dresses rugged are Jemez in vogue. Mountains We photographed near Santa Fe, our N.M. Western You’ll flair want in to ask Santa for a new pair of boots. Houston writer Allison Bagley has assembled a stellar lineup of gifts to give (and receive!) for the holidays.
