Seton Hall knocks off 9th-ranked Kentucky

NEW YORK — Keldon Johnson caught the ball near center court and heaved in a prayer of a shot at the regulation buzzer that sent Kentucky players and fans into a pulsating frenzy.

Surely now, with all that momentum, the ninth-ranked Wildcats finally would take control in overtime and escape from New York with a hard-fought victory.

But this scrappy Seton Hall squad had a lot more left.

Myles Cale hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 9.5 seconds remaining, and the Pirates overcame Johnson’s half-court fling that tied the score, stunning Kentucky 84-83 on Saturday in a Madison Square Garden thriller.

Johnson had a chance to win it for the Wildcats (7-2), but his 3-point try with a second left was blocked by Quincy McKnight. The ball went out of bounds as time expired, and excited Seton Hall players rushed off the bench to celebrate a huge win.

Myles Powell scored 25 of his 28 points after halftime for the Pirates (6-3).

DUKE 91, YALE 58

Freshman RJ Barrett had 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the No. 3 Blue Devils won at Durham, N.C.

Fellow rookie Zion Williamson had 20 points for Duke (9-1), which led 41-32 at halftime but hit its first six shots after the break to finally stretch out the lead.

Miye Oni had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-3).

KANSAS 63 NEW MEXICO ST. 60

Dedric Lawson had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the No. 2 Jayhawks beat the Aggies in the Jayhawk Shootout at Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas (8-0) offense stalled after a hot start in its first game without injured center Udoka Azubuike, going scoreless for over five minutes in the first half.

New Mexico State (7-2) had a chance to tie it on a 3-pointer with six seconds to go, but JoJo Zamora's attempt bounced off the rim.

MICHIGAN 89 SOUTH CAROLINA 78

Jordan Poole scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half as the fifth-ranked Wolverines won at Ann Arbor, Mich., to remained unbeaten in 10 games.

Michigan (10-0) was ahead by six at halftime and led comfortabl­y for most of the second half.

Chris Silva led South Carolina (4-5) with 18 points.

AUBURN 82, DAYTON 72

Bryce Brown scored a careerhigh 34 points and made six 3-pointers to lead the No. 8 Tigers by the Flyers at Auburn, Ala.

Jared Harper had 20 points and seven assists for Auburn (8-1).

MICHIGAN ST. 63, FLORIDA 59

Kyle Ahrens scored the No. 10 Spartans’ final seven points, including a two-handed jam with 8.7 seconds left, in a win over the Gators at Gainesvill­e, Fla.

Xavier Tillman led the Spartans (8-2) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Andrew Nembhard and Allen led Florida (5-4) with 13 points apiece.

FLORIDA ST. 79, CONNECTICU­T 71

Terance Mann scored 20 points, and David Nichols had 16 as the 11th-ranked Seminoles topped the Huskies in the second game of the Never Forget Tribute Classic at Newark, N.J.

Mfiondu Kabengele added 15 points for Florida State (8-1), which has won three in a row.

MARQUETTE 74, WISCONSIN 69

Markus Howard scored 27 points, and freshman Joey Hauser added 15 as the Golden Eagles beat the 12th-ranked Badgers at Milwaukee.

Sam Hauser had 13 points and 14 rebounds for Marquette (8-2).

Wisconsin (8-2) wasted a terrific effort from Ethan Happ, who had 34 points and 11 rebounds.

TULSA 47, KANSAS ST. 46

Martins Igbanu made a goahead jump hook with 1:51 left, lifting the Golden Hurricane to an upset victory over the No. 16 Wildcats at Tulsa, Okla.

Curran Scott scored 14 points for Tulsa (7-3), and Igbanu had nine points and six rebounds.

Kansas State (6-2) had one last chance in the final seconds, but Barry Brown Jr. rimmed out a floater on a drive into the lane.

BUFFALO 80 ST. BONAVENTUR­E 62

Jayvon Graves hit a career-best five 3-pointers and scored 19 points, helping the 17th-ranked Bulls win at Olean, N.Y.

CJ Massinburg had 14 points and nine rebounds as Buffalo (9-0) added to its best start to a season since going 15-0 in 1930-31.

VILLANOVA 70 SAINT JOSEPH’S 58

Eric Paschall had 14 points and nine rebounds as the No. 21 Wildcats won at home to earn their 25th consecutiv­e Big 5 victory.

Joe Cremo and Phil Booth scored 12 points apiece as Villanova (8-2) continued its dominance of the longstandi­ng city series with Philadelph­ia rivals Saint Joseph’s, Penn, La Salle and Temple.

MISSISSIPP­I ST. 82, CLEMSON 71

Lamar Peters was 8-for-11 on 3-points and scored 28 points to lead the 22nd-ranked Bulldogs to their fifth consecutiv­e victory at Newark, N.J.

MARYLAND 55 LOYOLA-CHICAGO 41

Anthony Cowan scored 17 points as the No. 23 Terrapins overcame a sluggish start to win at Baltimore.

Cowan became the 55th player in Maryland history to score 1,000 career points, hitting the milestone with a free throw in the first half.

NEBRASKA 94, CREIGHTON 75

James Palmer scored 30 points, and Thomas Allen had a career-high 18 points as the 24thranked Cornhusker­s won at Lincoln, Neb., to end a sevengame losing streak to its in-state rival.

The sellout crowd at Pinnacle Bank Arena began chanting “Go Big Red!” as Nebraska (8-2) nursed a 19-point lead with under two minutes to play.

FURMAN 74 SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATE 60

Jordan Lyons had 20 points, and Noah Gurley added 15 points and six rebounds, powering the No. 25 Paladins to victory at Spartanbur­g, S.C.

TEXAS ST. 90 HOUSTON BAPTIST 80

Alonzo Sule nailed 10 of 11 shots from the floor for a careerhigh 23 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to help the Bobcats hold off the Huskies at San Marcos.

Texas State (9-1) is off to its best start since 1952-53.

Ian Dubose had a career-best 31 points and nine rebounds for Houston Baptist (2-5)and Edward Hardt added a career-high 18 points .

TEXAS SOUTHERN 107 CONCORDIA 70

Trayvon Reed scored 32 points on 14-of-15 shooting from the field as the Tigers rolled to an easy victory at the H&PE Arena.

Jeremy Combs had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Texas Southern (4-6), which also got 14 points and 12 rebounds from Devocio Butler.
