JOYCE BETTY (RIEKEL) BARRY

Joyce Barry, 91, passed peacefully on December 4, 2018 at her home in Houston, TX, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmothe­r who held enduring affection for her family and friends.

Joyce was born on April 21, 1927 in New York City, N.Y., to Henry and Violet Hurlbut Riekel. She became the childhood sweetheart of Russell John Barry 83 years ago while attending the 5th grade. They were married in 1947, shortly after Russell returned home from his WWII overseas deployment with the 101st Airborne Division. Russell remained steadfastl­y by her side during Joyce’s long illness.

Also surviving are daughter Leslie (Darrell) Pierce; grandchild­ren Ryan (Courtney) Pierce; and her greatgrand­children Christian and Colton Pierce; all residing in Katy, TX. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, two children- Russell J. Barry, Jr. and Christophe­r Barry, and grandson Travis Pierce.

Joyce’s early career included employment as a supervisor for AT&T in New York City. She moved to Houston in 1961 when Exxon made the decision to relocate her husband and its business here. Shortly after, Joyce establishe­d her family and lifelong friendship­s as members of St. Christophe­r’s Episcopal Church. She loved her time as a Sunday school teacher. Joyce was involved in genealogic­al research and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed traveling.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on December 15, 2018 at St. Christophe­r’s Episcopal Church (713-465-6015) located at 1656 Blalock Rd, Houston, TX 77080. Internment will occur on a future date at the Houston National Cemetery with a private ceremony.
