Iowa St. hammers No. 5 Kansas 77-60

-

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State served notice that it is a Big 12 contender again after an ugly rebuilding campaign last season.

Marial Shayok scored 24 points as the streaking Cyclones routed No. 5 Kansas 77-60 on Saturday for their most lopsided victory over the Jayhawks in 46 years.

Freshman Tyrese Haliburton made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Iowa State (12-2, 2-0), which opened Big 12 play with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2015. It was the Cyclones' fifth consecutive victory overall.

Kansas (12-2, 1-1) committed a season-high 24 turnovers in its worst loss to Iowa State since an 89-65 blowout at Lawrence in 1973.

“They're the standard in our league, and the team we're all trying to catch,” Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said. “It's a great win. I loved the way they competed.”

Despite getting outrebounded 41-26, Iowa State — now one shy of matching its win total from a dismal 13-18 showing a year ago — made surprisingly easy work of Kansas in part by shooting 9-of-13 on 3s in the second half.

“We were awful. But they were good,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “They manhandled us.”

Quentin Grimes scored 19 points for Kansas, including 14 in a row for the Jayhawks in one stretch.

Kansas played without big man Udoka Azubuike, who was hit on the right wrist during Friday's practice. Self said about an hour before tip-off that X-rays on Azubuike's wrist were negative, but he was in too much pain to play.

ALABAMA 77, KENTUCKY 75

Tevin Mack scored 22 points as the Crimson Tide topped the No. 13 Wildcats at Tuscaloosa, Ala., in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Dazon Ingram scored all 11 of his points after halftime, including some key free throws in the fifth consecutive win for Alabama (10-3, 1-0).

PJ Washington scored on a dunk with five seconds to play, and Kentucky (10-3, 0-1) quickly fouled John Petty, who made 1-of-2 from the line.

Tyler Herro's 3-point try for the win at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

DUKE 87, CLEMSON 68

Freshman Zion Williamson had 25 points, 10 rebounds and a spectacular 360-degree dunk as the top-ranked Blue Devils beat the Tigers at Durham, N.C., in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

RJ Barrett, the ACC's leading scorer, finished with 13 points while freshman point guard Tre Jones had 10 points and a seasonbest nine assists for Duke (12-1, 1-0), which turned 19 Clemson turnovers into 27 points.

TENNESSEE 96, GEORGIA 50

Jordan Bowden scored 20 points as the third-ranked Volunteers opened Southeastern Conference play by trouncing the Bulldogs at Knoxville, Tenn., for their eighth consecutive victory.

Tennessee (12-1, 1-0) recorded the most lopsided triumph in the series' 156-game history, surpassing a 105-69 Volunteers victory on Feb. 1, 1975.

VIRGINIA 65, FLORIDA ST. 52

Kyle Guy scored 21 points as the No. 4 Cavaliers limited the ninth-ranked Seminoles to only 15 field goals in a victory at Charlottesville, Va.

Guy scored 18 in the first half as Virginia (13-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened a 42-23 lead.

Phil Cofer scored nine points for Florida State (12-2, 0-1), which shot just 34 percent (15-for-44) from the field.

NEW MEXICO 85, NEVADA 58

Anthony Mathis scored 27 points to help the Lobos rout the No. 6 Wolf Pack at Albuquerque, N.M.

High-scoring Nevada (14-1, 1-1 Mountain West) shot just 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the field and committed 14 turnovers.

Vance Jackson had 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals for New Mexico (8-6, 2-0).

MICHIGAN ST. 86, OHIO ST. 77

Cassius Winston scored 25 points, and Nick Ward added 21 as the eighth-ranked Spartans beat the No. 14 Buckeyes at Columbus, Ohio, for their eighth consecutive victory.

The second half was tied six times before Michigan State (13-2, 4-0 Big Ten) took the lead on a Ward foul shot. A layup by Kenny Goins then put the Spartans up by three with 3:28 left.

OKLAHOMA 74, OKLAHOMA ST. 64

Kristian Doolittle had 16 points and eight rebounds to help the No. 23 Sooners defeat the Cowboys at Norman, Okla.
