The shutdown and the wall
Tumblin’ down
Regarding “Pastors voice support for wall” (City/State, Friday): I had to laugh at the U.S. Pastor Council’s support of Trump’s wall, reiterating their call for a “biblical approach” to illegal immigration, including building a wall.
They should pray that hopeful immigrants don’t adopt the biblical approach to destroying walls, which in the case of the walls of Jericho, consisted of blowing trumpets. Joshua 6:14-15. Janet L. Lachman, Austin
Where credit is due …
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., are blocking spending for the border wall because: (a) they hate Trump; (b) they are pandering to their base; and (c) they are afraid they will look bad when Trump actually provides a solution to a problem that they have refused to deal with.
Politicians have been discussing the illegal immigration problem for years and have accomplished what? Zero. Zip. Nada.
As unlikeable as Trump sometimes is, he deserves credit for pushing to solve a problem where politicians like Pelosi and Schumer have only been “flapping their gums” and “kicking the can down the road.”
I have to side with President Trump on this one. Bob Fowler, Point Blank
Make Ivanka pay for it
During the partial government shutdown, authorities have made suggestions for federal employees not receiving paychecks on how to raise money to pay for rent, food and other necessities.
Possibly the same suggestions can be implemented to raise the money for the border wall at the center of the shutdown. For example, the Trump family can have a garage sale or they can walk dogs in the neighborhood.
Maybe members of Congress can join in on these money-raising activities.
Once the border wall funds have been secured following these government suggestions, then the shutdown can be ended. William Greene, League City
Government? Meh
Let the government shutdown continue. Maybe we’ll learn that we can do without some of the services. Jack Gibbs, Hempstead Not sending our best
I think we should let President Trump build the wall and then put him on the other side and see if it works! Doris Cash, Point Blank
