LORANE JAY BUTLER

1944-2019

Lorane Jay Butler, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on October 30, 1944 in Burden, Kansas, to parents, Lorane Wayne Butler and Edna Marie Lytle. His parents wanted to carry on a family name, so he became Lorane Jay Butler, but Mother decided to call him Jay. Known his whole life as a man of pure kindness, intelligence and humility; Jay was a friend to everyone.

In the early 1960s, Jay moved to Emporia, Kansas. He married and had three children; Julie, Dawn and Scott. He raised his young family and worked his way through college as a milkman, gas station attendant, and postal worker. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Emporia State University in 1970. Immediately followed by a Master of Arts in Mathematics in 1971, also from ESU.

After spending several years in St. Louis in the early 1970s, he relocated to Houston, Texas via Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. During the 1980s he remarried and had one daughter; Sarah. In 1992, he retired from the telephone company to be a stay-at-home dad. He returned to the workforce in 1997. After spending a total of 35 years administering telephone systems, he retired from Total Petrochemicals in 2014.

Upon retiring he relocated to San Antonio, Texas. He spent his final years involved with St. Matthew’s UMC and helping with his grandsons in the afternoon. Unfortunately, Jay fell ill in April 2018. After a two-month hospital stay he moved in with his daughter, Sarah, who left her job and became his primary caregiver. Jay passed peacefully at home, with his daughter by his side. Jay was the kindest man we’ve ever known, and he will be missed. MEMORIAL SERVICE
