RUTH JERSEY SELLS FOR $5.6M

A Babe Ruth road jersey dating to 1928-30 sold at an auction for $5.6 million.

Hunt Auctions, which handled Saturday’s sale, says the price breaks a record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabili­a ever sold. A Ruth jersey from 1920 previously sold for $4.4 million.

The auction was conducted at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees jersey was part of a collection of items that Ruth’s family put up for sale. His granddaugh­ter, Linda Ruth Tosetti, said in a statement that a portion of the proceeds will go to charity.

YANKEES TO GET ENCARNACIO­N

The New York Yankees neared a trade for Seattle slugger Edwin Encarnacio­n on Saturday night.

A person familiar with the negotiatio­ns told the Associated Press the teams were trying to complete the deal. It was not immediatel­y known what the Yankees might send to the Mariners.

The 36-year-old Encarnacio­n began the day leading the AL with 21 home runs in his first season with Seattle. He has averaged 37 homers and 109 RBIs in his last seven years.

CHICAGO CUBS

RHP Kyle Hendricks was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammati­on. The move Saturday comes a day after one of the starter’s worst outings of the season. He allowed five runs in 41⁄3 innings of a 5-3 loss to the Dodgers.

COLORADO ROCKIES

Top prospect Brendan Rodgers was optioned to Class AAA Albuquerqu­e. Rodgers, an infielder, batted .246 in 35 games and struck out 22 times in 70 plate appearance­s this season.

LOS ANGELES ANGELS

The club designated Cody Allen for assignment a day after the veteran reliever gave up four runs in a 9-4 loss to Tampa Bay.

The 30-year-old Allen was signed to a one-year, $8.5 million contract in January after seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians. In 25 games this season, Allen is 0-2 with a 6.26 ERA and four saves in four opportunit­ies.

NEW YORK METS

Desperate for bullpen help, the team acquired reliever Brooks Pounders from Cleveland for cash. Pounders, who had been pitching at Class AAA Columbus, was immediatel­y added to the big league roster for Saturday’s game against St. Louis.
