Morton’s streak ends in Rays’ loss

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Charlie Morton lost for the first time in 22 starts as the Los Angeles Angels hit three homers to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Saturday.

The loss was Morton’s first since Aug. 11, when he was pitching for the Astros against Seattle. He struck out nine in six innings, giving up four runs on five hits.

David Fletcher, Justin Bour and Kevan Smith homered for the Angels. Fletcher’s three-run home run in the second inning off Morton (8-1) spotted lefthander Jose Suarez an early lead in his third major league start, and the Angels bullpen preserved it with 31⁄3 shutout innings.

Hansel Robles pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 12 opportunit­ies, helping the Angels win for the fourth time in five games.

INDIANS 4, TIGERS 2: Shane Bieber pitched impressive­ly into the eighth inning, and Leonys Martin stole home to lift Cleveland to a victory at Detroit.

METS 8, CARDINALS 7: Infielder Jeff McNeil made a game-saving throw from right field to home plate for the final out, and host New York held off St. Louis.

TWINS 5, ROYALS 4: C.J. Cron drove in the go-ahead run for Minnesota with a sixth-inning double, making Jake Odorizzi the second 10-game winner in the majors this season and sealing a win over visiting Kansas City.

PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 5: Cesar Hernandez singled in two runs off closer Luke Jackson in the ninth inning, and Philadelph­ia rallied from a one-run deficit to snap host Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak.

CUBS 2, DODGERS 1: Anthony Rizzo hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off closer Kenley Jansen in the ninth, lifting Chicago to a victory over NL West-leading Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

ATHLETICS 11, MARINERS 2: Frankie Montas struck out nine in six innings for his team-leading ninth win, and Oakland routed visiting Seattle.

RANGERS 4, REDS 3: Jeff Mathis had a pair of hits and drove in a run, and Texas won at Cincinnati.

MARLINS 4, PIRATES 3: Pablo Lopez pitched seven strong innings as Miami edged visiting Pittsburgh.

YANKEES 8, WHITE SOX 4: Gleyber Torres hit a tworun homer, and New York won at Chicago.

ROCKIES 14, PADRES 8: Ian Desmond hit a grand slam, and host Colorado defeated San Diego.
