Seasonal jobs offer shift options, perks

- By Valerie Sweeten CORESPONDENT

The holidays are just around the corner, which means seasonal hiring is preparing for a busy season whether with catering, shopping, and package deliveries.

Catering and holiday parties have opportunities.

Elizabeth Stone, president, Silver Stone Events, said wait staff and event kitchen staff are needed as the numbers of events increase dramatically starting in October and through December. College students or high school seniors looking for additional work can be a good fit for holiday money. The work is physically demanding with long hours.

“Many of shifts are evening and weekend hours, but we have a lot of daytime and weekday events,” said Stone. “Most shifts range from six to eight hours, depending on the type of event, and can be anything from early morning to late afternoon into the evening. It is very flexible. Seasonal employees can elect to work a shift or not.”

Stone said their seasonal rates are $13.50/hour and go up to $17.50/hour depending on experience level.

If retail is your preference, there are many options and benefits. It’s not unusual for retail employees to receive discounts on merchandise.

Department stores, such as Macy’s Inc. are ready for applicants, according to Carolyn Sisson, coordinator, Media Relations-South Region, Macy’s Inc. Their National Hiring Event is Oct. 24.

Macy’s is hiring approximately 1,700 full-time, part-time, and flexible positions in the Houston and Louisiana area, which includes the Houston, Baton Rouge and New Orleans markets.

“We welcome seasonal hires to help provide the best experience for our customers,” said Sisson. “While retail experience is helpful, we’re looking for individuals with a great attitude who are enthusiastic about serving customers. Our stores are special shopping destinations during the holiday season. We go the extra mile to help customers find the perfect gift.”

Macy’s Inc. seasonal colleagues qualify for a 20% merchandise discount on most purchases and are eligible for path to growth incentive, based on quarterly goals. To apply, go online to www.macysJOBS.com.

At James Avery Artisan Jewelry, Lisa Henrie, director, talent acquisition and development, said they offer associates flexible scheduling and a generous discount.

They are currently accepting applications for seasonal part-time positions. For location details and to apply, visit www.JamesAvery.com/careers. Prior customer service experience and being bilingual in English and Spanish are a plus. Training is provided.

“Locations accepting seasonal applicants are listed on our careers site,” said Henrie. “Applications can be submitted for a specific store location if there is an opening. We have availability requirements for evenings, weekends and specific dates during the holidays.”

In addition, UPS anticipates hiring about 100,000 seasonal employees to support the package volume from November through January 2020. Full-time and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, drivers, and driver helpers, are an entry point for permanent employment.
