TSU’s skid endures in loss to Southern

DALLAS — Glendon McDaniel threw three touchdown passes, two of them in a decisive third quarter, and Southern defeated Texas Southern 28-21 in the State Fair Showdown on Saturday.

After the score was tied at 7 at halftime, McDaniel connected with Jamar Washington for 35 yards and Hunter Register for 31 yards and a 21-7 Jaguars lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Texas Southern’s Devin Williams scored on a 14-yard run before McDaniel’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Davis put Southern ahead by 14 again, 28-14. A 4-yard run by Williams closed out the scoring with 5:57 to go. The Tigers (0-7, 0-3 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) fumbled at the Jaguars’ 26 on their only remaining possession, and Jordan Williams recovered for Southern (4-3, 3-0).

Cody Orgeron passed for 303 yards, two touchdowns and an intercepti­on and ran for 80 yards and a score to help the Cowboys beat the Huskies in Lake Charles, La.

Houston Baptist (4-4, 1-3 Southland Conference) cut the deficit to within one touchdown at 14-7, 21-14 and 28-20, but the Cowboys scored back-to-back touchdowns to push the lead to 42-20 with 2:56 left in the game.

Elijah Mack gave the Cowboys (4-4, 2-3) the lead for good with a 1-yard scoring run that capped the opening drive of the game.

Jared Scott caught four passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns to help the Panthers rout the Dragons at Prairie View.

Jalen Morton started at quarterbac­k for Prairie View (3-4) and played 1½ quarters before Tyriek Starks entered in relief. Morton passed for 144 yards, two touchdowns and an intercepti­on, and Starks passed for 194 yards and a touchdown.

Ryan Humphries threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Ife Adeyi, and the Bearkats forced a pair of turnovers, all in the second half, as Sam Houston State (5-3, 4-1 Southland) shut out the Colonels in Huntsville.

Luke Anthony hit Kobe Clark with a 22-yard scoring pass in the second overtime period to lift the host Wildcats (4-4, 3-3) to a Southland Conference win over the Lumberjack­s (1-6, 1-3).

Mason Fine led the gamewinnin­g drive capped by Ethan Mooney’s 22-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Mean Green (3-4, 2-1 Conference USA) over the Blue Raiders in Denton.

Jon Copeland passed for a season-best 376 yards with four touchdowns as Incarnate Word (5-2, 4-1 Southland Conference) pushed its win streak to four games with a defeat of Lamar (4-3, 2-3) in San Antonio.

Anthony Jones ran 15 times for 102 yards and a touchdown to help the Panthers beat the Miners (1-5, 0-3 C-USA) in Miami.
