TD pass with 22 seconds left caps thriller

Colton Marwill wasn't aware of his statistics as he walked off Pridgeon Stadium's field after Tomball Memorial’s 73-70 win over Cypress Lakes on Saturday.

The Memorial quarterback was only grateful for the win. The numbers from this game of the year candidate are still worth marveling at, though.

Marwill was 23 of 33 for 414 yards and seven touchdowns in the win, including the game-winning 22-yard pass to Logan Kyle with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

That wasn't the most prolific performance from a quarterback in this game. Cypress Lakes’ Sofian Massoud accounted for 10 total touchdowns and 652 total yards in this game, throwing for 527 yards and six scores on 26of-38 passing and rushing for 125 yards and four scores on 22 carries.

Tomball Memorial (6-1 overall, 4-1 in District 14-6A) and Cypress Lakes (4-4, 3-3) combined for 1,310 total yards of offense, 20 touchdowns and 143 points. Eight of the 20 touchdowns came in the fourth quarter and half of those eight in the final three minutes.

Heading into 2019, only eight other games between public schools had combined for 143 or more points in state history.

“Funnest game I've ever played in,” Marwill said. “It’s huge. It's a huge statement game. Couldn’t be more proud of our team.”

Kyle caught 11 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. Not to be forgotten for Tomball Memorial is Joseph Manjack’s six catches for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

Cypress Lakes’ Khalil Matten caught 10 balls for 200 yards and three scores. Cypress Lakes had two other 100-yard receiving performances — Kelan Dove for 101 yards and a touchdown on four catches and Josh McMillan for 137 yards and two TDs on five catches.

Massoud even played safety late in the game. This game had it all.

“In the second half, it really started picking up, going back and forth,” Massoud said. “Our focus is just the next series. What do we have to do now? What do we have to do next? That’s what it was for us.”

Massoud's 51-yard touchdown pass to McMillan, who wrestled the ball away from a defender for the score, was thought to be the game-winner with 1:06 remaining in the game. It put Cypress Lakes at 70 points.

Marwill, who had 11 carries for 70 yards and a score, and Tomball Memorial had too much time to have the last say. In a game with few stops, Tomball Memorial's defense got one to end the game.

Cypress Lakes coach Ronald Patton said the Spartans’ goals are still intact in the 14-6A playoff race, while Tomball Memorial keeps pace in the district title race with Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods.
