JOHN HOWARD BOSWELL
1932-2019
John Howard Boswell, of Houston, passed away at home on Monday, the 14th of October 2019. He was 87 years of age. Born on the 22nd of March 1932, he was a native and lifelong Houstonian.
John earned a BBA from the University of Houston in 1955. After graduating from college, John volunteered for the Navy Flight Training Program and proudly served on active duty for three and a half years. Proficient in instrument flying, he was assigned to the USS Saratoga on an all-weather attack squadron requiring carrier take offs and landings at night and in inclement weather. While in training, he completed Naval Justice School sparking his interest in the law. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until 1971, flying with a squadron based in New Orleans.
After completing his active duty service, John passed the Texas bar exam in 1962 before graduating from
The University of Houston Law School in 1963. He immediately founded his first of many law firms as a named partner, practicing law for 56 years. John loved being a lawyer, advocating in the courtroom, serving his clients, and mentoring young attorneys.
John was a Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and Board Certified in Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He was also an active member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the Litigation Counsel of America. John was a member of the State Bar of Texas and the United States Supreme Court Bar.
A longtime member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, John had a passion for life, he loved spending time with his family and traveling the world. He especially enjoyed his wife Nancy’s culinary excellence.
John was pre-deceased by his father, Henry Oliver Boswell; his mother, Opal Everestt Wineberg; his brother, Henry Oliver Boswell, Jr.; and his son, John Brooke Boswell. John is survived by his wife, Nancy Dierker
Boswell; son, Mark Richard Boswell and his mother, Sharon Eckert; and his daughterin-law, Kathryn Hillsman Boswell. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Charlotte Adelaide Boswell and Matilda Brooke Boswell; his sister-in-law, Jean Boswell; Nancy’s daughter, Ashley Klaasmeyer; and son-inlaw, Craig Klaasmeyer, and her grandchildren, William Klaasmeyer and Eloise Klaasmeyer.
The memorial service is to be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 21st of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where The Rev. Brad Goad is to officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in his name be directed to the John B. Boswell Scholarship for the Physically Challenged; the University of St. Thomas, 3800 Montrose Blvd., Houston, TX 77006; or to Texas Children’s Hospital, the Gutsy Kids Fund, 1919 S.
